Although only just outside Ashford, Great Chart, along with its neighbour Little Chart, retains its traditional village character. However, it was once a more substantial settlement and a significant market centre for the locality. This street scene shows some fine red brick, tile-hung, ivy-clad houses with beautiful old chimneys, lining the left-hand side of the road. Various villagers have paused and are deliberately posing for the cameraman.

I lived at Swinford with my family from 1953 to approx 1966 or '67. My father put in the pool after we had a very extensive fire on Guy Fawkes night. I loved the house, the gardens and the resident ghost who I believed to be Veronica, wife of Alfred Austin. When I was 18 we moved to Hampshire. My brother went to prep school at Friars in Great Chart. Very fond memories of Great Chart!
If I own the title 'Lord of the Manor of Swinford', how can I relate myself to the Swinford Manor? I would be pleased to get a reply or acknowledgement from you. Regards Nelson Brunton
